The situation

What we did
We started with an audit of the application, its data and the servers it ran on, and wrote down what the system actually did, including the rules nobody had documented.
From there we modernized the application in stages and moved it to managed cloud services. The old and new environments ran side by side, data was kept in sync, and each part was switched over only after it had been tested against real usage.
